Zener Cards: Zener cards are a set of 25 cards used to test extrasensory perception (ESP), particularly telepathy and clairvoyance. Developed in the 1930s, the deck consists of five symbols (circle, cross, wavy lines, square, star), with five cards per symbol. In experiments, a “sender” focuses on a card, and a “receiver” tries to guess the symbol, with success rates above chance (20%) suggesting ESP abilities. The cards are still used in parapsychology and inspired tools like Russell Targ’s ESP Trainer.

Creator: Karl Zener (1903–1964), an American psychologist, co-created the cards with J.B. Rhine, a parapsychology pioneer, at Duke University. Zener, a perceptual psychology expert, designed the simple, distinct symbols to ensure clear testing conditions. Rhine popularized their use in controlled ESP experiments, establishing them as a standard tool in parapsychology research.
